What is a moving loan?

A moving loan is an unsecured personal loan used to fund a relocation. The average professional move within the U.S. costs $1,500–$5,000; a long-distance or interstate move often runs $5,000–$12,000 once you include movers, packing supplies, insurance, storage, travel, deposits, and setup costs at the new residence.

Because the loan is unsecured, no collateral is required. Approval is based on your credit, income, and debt-to-income ratio — not on the value of your possessions or the address you're moving to.

Why a loan beats credit cards during a move

Moving costs pile up fast: mover deposit, packing supplies, security deposit at the new place, first and last month's rent, utility hookup fees, cleaning, and often a hotel stay in between. Stacking those on credit cards during a period when your paycheck may also be disrupted is a fast track to a five-figure balance at 22%+ APR.

A fixed-rate loan replaces all of that with one payment and a firm payoff date. Borrow $8,000 over 48 months at 12% APR and you pay about $211/month, all-in — an amount you can budget around before you sign the new lease.

Common relocation costs to include

Build a full budget before applying: moving company or truck rental, packing materials, insurance/valuation coverage, storage (short- or long-term), travel (flights, gas, hotels, pet transport), security deposit and first/last month's rent or closing costs, utility hookup and internet installation, appliances and furniture for the new place, cleaning at the old place, and any lease-break or breakage fees at your previous residence.

For interstate or job-related moves, also include short-term housing while you find a permanent place, and any temporary work-from-home setup costs.

What to prepare before you apply

Have your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, current address, employer and monthly income, and bank routing and account numbers ready. Get quotes from at least two moving companies so you can request the right loan amount.

Apply about 30 days before moving day so funds are in your account when the mover's deposit is due and the new landlord needs your security deposit.
