How the personal loan calculator works

A personal loan is a fixed-rate installment loan. Your monthly payment is calculated with the standard amortization formula: it stays the same every month, but each payment splits between interest (calculated on the current balance) and principal. Early payments are mostly interest; later payments are mostly principal.

Two levers change your payment the most: the APR (rate) and the term (length). A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest. A shorter term does the opposite. The calculator's estimate is based on the inputs you provide — your real APR and offer come from our lending partners after a soft-pull rate check.
